The Green Mile (book)

The Green Mile (book)
One of my favorite books ever, I'm currently reading it... again. I love the book that much!! Plus, it was also my dad's favorite book too, :D

-The Green Mile is a 1996 serial novel written by Stephen King. It tells the story of death row supervisor Paul Edgecombe and his encounter with a mysterious inmate named John Coffey, who seems to be too good to be true, he is sympathetic, and displays a mysterious power of healing. This book is an example of miracles coming true in the weirdest places and at the weirdest times.

Plot
-The story is told from the first person perspective of Paul Edgecombe, who is now an old man in the Georgia Pines Nursing Home. It switches back and forth between his time in the Cold Mountain Prison in 1932 and his time as an old man in a nursing home with his fellow resident Elanie Connolly in 1996. The name of the story, "The Green Mile" comes from the fact that the floor of the death row in which he worked at was the color of the floor's linoleum. The year 1932 marks the year of John Coffey, a 6'8'' black man who has been convicted of raping and murdering 2 small white girls named Kathe and Cora Detterick. During his time on the Mile, John interacts with the various other prisoners, such as Eduard Delacroix, a Cajun arsonist who raped and murdered a little girl of 12 years. To get rid of her body, he burned it and ended up burning down the building where she lived and ended up killing 3 other people, William "Billy the Kid" Wharton, a wild acting, dangerous multiple murderer who is bound and determined to make as much trouble as humanly possible. Other prisoners include Arlen Bitterbuck, a Native American convicted of killing a man in a fight over a pair of boots, who is the first to die in the electric chair (or Old Sparky as the guards call it). Arthur Flanders, a real estate executive who killed his half senile father by pushing him out a 3rd story window to collect on his insurance, who eventually gets life instead of death, and Mr. Jingles, a small mouse who Del teaches various tricks.

-Paul and the other guards are constantly bothered by Percy Wetmore, a sadistic guard who gets a rise out of bugging the other prisoners. The other guards have to be civil because Percy is related to the governor by marriage, he is the nephew of the governor's wife. When Percy is offered a position at the nearby Briar Ridge psychiatric hospital as a secretary, Paul thinks it would be a good idea; they would finally be rid of him. Percy refuses to leave until he is allowed to sit in on an actual execution. Paul reluctantly allows him to sit in on the execution of Del. Percy deliberately sabotages Del's execution by not soaking the sponge in brine that sits inside the electrode cap for quick death. When the executioner, Van Hay, is told to throw the switch, the electric causes Del to catch fire and suffer a long, slow, agonizing death.

-Over time, Paul realizes John possesses an unexplainable healing power, which he uses to cure Paul's urinary tract infection. He also revives Del's mouse Mr. Jingles after Percy crushes him. John is empathetic and sensitive to the thoughts and feelings of others around him. One night, the guards drug Wild Bill, then put a straightjacket on Perct and lock him in the padded Restraint Room so they can smuggle John out to take him to the home of the prison warden Hal Moore's house. The reason is Hal's wife, Melinda, is suffering from a deadly brain tumor the size of a lemon. The guards think that John may be able to cure her. John cures her and she is restored back to health, and this has Hal crying in happiness that she won't die by Christmas. When they return, John passes the "disease" onto Percy and this causes him to go mad and shoot Wild Bill to death before falling into a coma-like state from which there is no return. He is committed to the Briar Ridge Mental Hospital in a way he didn't want.

-Meanwhile, all this time, Paul has become more and more convinced that John did not rape and murder the Detterick twins. He finds out that it was Wild Bill Wharton who raped and murdered the 2 girls, that John was actually trying to bring them back, but he couldn't. Later, John tells Paul that what he saw when Wharton grabbed his arm one time, how Wharton convinced the girls to be silent using their relationship as sisters. Paul is unsure how to help John, but he tells him not to worry, as he is ready to die anyway, wanting to escape the foul cruelty of the world. John's execution is the last one Paul participates in. Years later, he introduces Mr. Jingles to Elaine just before the mouse dies, having lived 64 long, wonderful years past the events and explains that those healed by John gaines an unusually long lifespan. Elaine dies shortly after, never learning how Paul's wife died in his arms immediately after a bus accident, and that he saw John Coffey's ghost watching him from an overpass. Paul seems to be all alone, now 104 years old, and wondering how much longer he has.

Characters
  • Paul Edgecombe — The protagonist and narrator of the book and the death-row supervisor at Cold Mountain Penitentiary. He is 40 years old when the main bulk of the story takes place, in 1932. He is a caring man and takes excellent care of the men on his block, avoiding conflict and keeping the peace whenever possible. He is the first character to discover John Coffey's amazing abilities, when the prisoner cures his urinary tract infection. It is also his idea to take Coffey to try to cure Melinda, Warden Hal Moores' wife, of her brain tumor.
  • Brutus "Brutal" Howell — He is second in command on the Green Mile. He is a tall, imposing man but not violent at all unless necessary. His nickname of "Brutal" is intended as irony.
  • John Coffey — He is a massive black man (6'-8" tall), on death row for the alleged rape and murder of two young girls. He is very quiet and prefers to keep to himself, weeps almost constantly, and is afraid of the dark. Even at the end, during his execution, he asks Paul Edgecombe not to put on the traditional black silk mask used to block the view of the prisoner's face because he fears the dark. Coffey is described as "knowing his own name and not much else" and lacks the capability to so much as tie a simple knot. However, he is convicted of luring the girls away from their home, disposing of the watchdog, carefully planning and using abilities he would otherwise not be expected to have. He is the calmest and mildest prisoner the guards have ever seen, despite his hulking form. He turns out to be innocent of what he is accused of, but chooses to die anyway.
  • Percy Wetmore — He is an antagonist of the story, a young and sadistic guard who is only allowed to stay because he is the governor's nephew. He is very homophobic and attacks Eduard Delacroix for allegedly touching him, although it was an accident caused by Del stumbling out of the prison truck. He is later attacked by "Wild Bill" Wharton, consequently wets himself, and is teased by Delacroix for it. In retaliation, Percy deliberately sabotages Delacroix's execution. At the end of the story he is sent to the Briar Ridge mental institution, originally considered for a job but now as a patient, after Coffey transferred Melinda's disease to him which caused him to kill William Wharton. He eventually lives through a hospital fire and dies in 1965.
  • Eduard "Del" Delacroix — He is a Cajun prisoner with a fairly slow grasp of the English language. He is incarcerated for multiple deaths due to a fire he started while trying to cover up his rape and murder of a young girl. While on the Mile, Del befriends a mouse named Mr. Jingles, who becomes his best friend in his last days on death row. Percy, his enemy, sabotages his execution, forcing Del to die in a slow, gruesome death in the electric chair.
  • William "Wild Bill" Wharton — He is on death row for various crimes. He does not like the nickname "Wild Bill" but prefers to be called "Billy the Kid", a name which he has tattooed on his forearm. When he first arrives he manages to convince the guards that he is in a drugged stupor, only to attack and attempt to strangle to death Dean Stanton when they reach E Block. He continues to wreak havoc on the Mile and plays tricks such as urinating on the guards, amongst other things. He is punished by being placed in solitary confinement, but never seems to learn his lesson. As John Coffey is being smuggled to Hal Moores's house, Wild Bill grabs his arm and Coffey sees that he actually committed the murders Coffey was accused of. Therefore, Coffey gives Percy the "sickness" he took from the warden's wife, causing him to kill Wharton.
  • Mr. Jingles — An unusually intelligent mouse who enjoys eating peppermint sweets. He becomes a friend to Eduard Delacroix in the few days before the man is executed. He is resurrected by John Coffey after being stomped on by Percy Wetmore. This gives him increased longevity and he finally dies 64 years later.

The game is focused around different good guys trying to rise through the ranks of the criminal underworld. The bad guys are commonly characters who have betrayed the good guy or characters who have the most impact preventing the good guy from his/her progress

-Assassinations and other crimes appear regularly, but occasionally driving a taxi, firefighting, street racing, bus driving, or learning to fly helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft are also present
-In the later ones, most notably Grand Theft Auto 2, the player is given a more expanded storyline in which he is forced to overcome an unfortunate event(i.e. being betrayed and left for dead) which serves as motivation for the character to advance.
-Grand Theft Auto III and later games have more prevalent voice acting, and radio stations, which simulate driving to music with DJs, radio personalities, commercials, talk radio, pop music and American culture.
-The use of vehicles in an explorable urban location provides a basic idea of a working city, complete with pedestrians who obey traffic. Further details are used to create an open ended atmosphere that has been used before, such as in The Simpsons Hit & Run, which is more family friendly.

Dimitri joins the team as their frogman
-The game returns to the present, where Sly is fighting with Dr. M. As he is about to be devoured, Sly realized he's been "cowardly" towards Carmelita. After seeing Bentley and Penelope together, he realizes what life is about. Just then, Carmelita arrives on the island with mercenaries, intending to capture Dr. M. She ends up fighting it out at sea. After the fight, the gang all work to retrieve Sly's cane, which is the key to the vault and fight Dr. M several times. After fighting security, they finally enter the Cooper vault, where Sly sees history of his ancestors. Dr. M manages to break into his vault and fight Sly again. Sly emerges as winner. Weekend

Man this weekend was long!!!! To start things off, on Friday, I had to go to the dentist! Ugggggghhhhhh! How I hate it! I had to get 3 fillings, at first I was scared to death of this and then I find out getting a filling is not painful, the only pain I felt was the slight pricking of them numbing my gums to do the filling. When I was going home, the entire right side of my face was completely numb, so it felt like I had a fat lip because my lip was numb, so was part of my nose, and almost the entire right side of my face! The numbness is finally gone, thank God! And also while there, I got the little gap in between my 2 front teeth fixed so it looks not so stupid and not so big you could drive a Mack truck through.

On Saturday, we did a little Christmas shopping. I, of course, have not been able to start on mine because I have not been able to find what I'm looking for, and then all of a sudden, my step dad says forget about the CD of Def Leppard and just get him some new PJ's, he says he needs them, and he told me that if I can find some with anything pool table related on them, get them! So I am, however, everyone else in my family is already almost done with their shopping. And also, I've been on an obsessive hunt for a job and when I was checking my email, I received one from a Macy's store in Kenwood Township. It was for a Seasonal holiday Retail Associate, basically doing little grunt work around the store, helping fellow employees, the basic general rundown of that basically. Well, I'm going for it, because I don't know if I'm gonna find work closer to home, I mean, the only neighborhoods that might seem close to my new home is Hyde Park, Cincinnati, Kenwood, Western Hills. My step dad was kinda worried about me going for this job in Kenwood because he says it's kind of far from home, but I told him I'd go for it just to see what happens. Never hurts to try. And IDK, but I really have to wonder how Hyde Park in Ohio got it's name? My step dad seems to think it's because of the Hyde Park in London. Maybe it is.

On Sunday, we did a little more Christmas shopping. We went to Toys R Us in Western Hills to find it. God, I love this store. Nowadays, kids have all the cool toys! Besides, I was occupied trying to find this Disney Princess Mulan doll. She's my fave Disney Princess. One of my step dad's nephews, Nick, wants this big huge Nerf guns. If you don't know what these are, they are basically plastic guns that shoot foam darts with suction cups on the end or soft foam balls. He wants one called Alpha Trooper Blaster and when we found it, it looks like a Tommy Gun for crying out loud. And to add insult to injury, he also wants a snow blower. My mom said let his stupid rich grandparents get it for him, they're rich. So as u can see, my mom and my step dad's nephew's grandparents don't exactly see eye to eye. It's because Nick wants all the expensive stuff. And my mom and step dad also did a little shopping for me while I was in another part of the store. We also got Nick's brother Michael a couple video games. He's into all these war games, so we got him Call of Duty 3 and SOCOM: Army, at least I think that's it, idk. Wasn't paying much attention. So maybe during the week, I can go out and start my shopping finally, first my step dad. I love him dearly, but he's very difficult. I'm not sure where I'm going to find pajama pants with pool cues and pool balls on them in a large size.

Acceptance Into Society

Have you ever felt that no matter what you did, you never felt accepted by your peers? When I was in high school, I was never accepted by my peers. I was the one everyone loved to pick on. I was the one whose locker was broken into, I was the one whose lock was switched around so I was late to class, I was the one who would have something stolen from them while out of the room, I was the one whose locker was defaced with degrading words pertaining to race of people I know. Even now, I still feel like I don't really belong anywhere. I feel like I don't belong even in my own family, I feel like a perpetual outsider, like I don't belong in a family like mine. I feel like an alien sometimes because my interests are different than those of others, my musical tastes are different than those of others, my taste in movies are different, my sense of style is just a tad retro, and my opinions on when it comes to guys I think are physically attractive are different. IDK, I just feel like I'm an outsider. I feel like no matter what I do, I'll never be accepted by people I know, and I always get this feeling that people make fun of me behind my back, like when I have my back to them, they choose then to start saying little silent insults about me. Well, if I ever catch anyone saying something about me, they'll definitely get an earful from me!

But, I look at it this way; you know how they say '1 in a million', well, I'm usually the one in a million, the one person who likes something that someone else may not. I'm proud of who I am, and if someone finds a problem with who I am, they can shove it, because I'm not changing for anyone. I am who I am. I'm not going to be one of these people who changes personalities and likes at the drop of a hat just to fit in. What happened to individuality? I guess that went out the window when people decided popularity was more important than being a unique individual. I'm not going to let someone mold me into what they want, screw that!

The reason I'm doing a post on things I like is because I want to show all who read this post that I'm not going to change who I am jut to fit in. Believe me when I say this, I really thought about changing who I was in high school just to be liked, but then, if I did that, I'd be a rather boring person, because all my high school classmates seemed too interested in music like rap. That's not to say rap is bad, I just don't care for it, I mean, the rap music that they listened to was about raping/beating/killing women or children, committing crimes, doing drugs, drinking alcohol, etc. That's not music, that's just noise in my opinion.

Case Studies
-http://library.thinkquest.org/04oct/00206/text_casestudies.htm
Lindy Chamberlain, "The Dingo Baby".
-On August 17, 1980, Lindy Chamberlain and her family were camping out in Uluru National Park, when they heard a cry from a tent where her son and infant daughter Azaria were staying. They seen a dingo lingering near the tent and they had realized, with horror, that a dingo had quite possibly eaten her daughter

-Later on, Azaria's jumpsuit was found in the dirt near a dingo lair and there were no bite marks on her outfit. This looked suspicious on Lindy, who claimed a dingo took her baby. Later on, when scientists investigated the baby's clothing, they found a bloody handprint in the shape of a woman's hand, which further concluded that Lindy Chamberlain had killed her infant daughter Azaria.

Jack the Ripper
-In 1888, it was not safe to walk the streets of London at night, especially in the lower end of it, Whitechapel and especially if you were a prostitute. Between late August and early November, 'Jack the Ripper' began murdering prostitutes, 5 to begin with. He stalked them and murdered them. He would go on to kill a total of 7 women, murdering them before dissecting them and leaving their corpses to the mercy of passing people. The first person to notice the neatness of the dissections was George B. Phillips. He was a police surgeon who noticed that the dissections were made with such precision that they could only be done by someone in the medical field or butchery field.

OJ Simpson
-June 12, 1994: OJ Simpson's ex-wife Nicole and her friend Ronald Goldman were foudn stabbed to death outside their Beverly Hills home. When the police arrived, they found Nicole's body highlighted by the porch light. She had been severely attacked, almost decapitated. At the scene, a bloodied left hand glove, a hat was found. And fast asleep inside the house were Nicole's 2 sons. When they went to nearby Brentwood to talk to Simpson, they found blood all over his Ford Bronco parked outside. When he was at trial, he had trouble wearing a key piece of evidence and it was also pointed out that one of the officers at the scene was racist against black people and had time to set up Simpson. He was cleared of all charged when he had problems wearing a key piece of evidence.

Hitler's Diaries
-At the end of WWII, a plane carrying all the private archives of Adolf Hitler crashed into the forest, destroying the archives forever. Although, it was never proven they were destroyed. This is what lured Gerd Heidemann to buy the first volume of Hitler's diary. He claimed that he got them from an East German general trying to smuggle Nazi artifacts out. And o make matters worse, Heidemann had an unhealthy obsession with all things Nazi. His boss told him to buy them for what would now be $3.7 million. They were published in the German magazine Stern and were considered a massive sensation.

-Questions began to arise about the actual authenticity of them, such as:
  • The labels supposedly being written in 1943, but actually being written 9 years earlier
  • The diary bindings contained polyester, which was not manufactured until 1953
  • The paper contained blankophor, which is a synthetic highlighter that was not invented until 1954.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeffrey_dahmer
-Jeffrey Dahmer is one of the most well known murders in all of history. He was a serial killer and sex offender who had a certain affinity for black, Asian, and Hispanic boys and men. On Nov. 28, 1994, he was killed by Christopher Scarver, a black delusional schizophrenic. He crushed Dahmer's head with a broom handle.

Ted Bundy
-When he was arrested in 1975, there was little or no evidence to link im to 30+ murders. While in Florida to stand trial, he killed 3 people in 1978. The case that finally jailed him was the murder of a little girl named Lisa Levy. There was a bite mark on her buttock that matched his crooked, chipped teeth.

The Atlanta Child Murders
-Wayne Williams was an American serial killer who was charged with 22 murders of young boys and men between 1979-1981. He killed 29 people, almost all children and also strangled. When the bodies were found, they all had a coarse yellow-green fiber on them and it was a fiber for a coarse carper fiber for cars. To get rid of the suspicious fiber, Williams then began stripping his victims naked to get rid of evidence.

Alton Coleman
-American serial killer who was executed in 1984 for the murder of 44 year old Marlene Walters of Norwood, Ohio.
-In May 1984, he met Debra Brown and they went on a frenzied spree of rape and murder. That same year, Coleman was busy befriending a single mother in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He was busy befriending the mother of 9 year old Vernita Wheat. On May 29, 1984, he convinced her mother to let him take Vernita out to buy a used stereo as a Mother's Day gift. They never returned. 3 weeks later, Vernita's fly blown body was found in a derelict building in Waukeegan, Illinois.
