Harry is at his stepparent's house for the summer and Uncle Vernon's dreadful sister, Marge comes for a visit. Harry also has a permission slip for Vernon to sign, and Vernon promises to sign it if Harry is good. But Marge angers Harry, because he thinks she is talking about his parents, when she is really talking about dogs, and when he gets angry, she suddenly starts blowing up like a balloon and flies out the window, flying over Surrey like a blimp. This angers Vernon, causing Harry to run to his room, pack his stuff and leave. He runs away and sit outside a park when he thinks he sees something. Then suddenly out of the blue, a towering violently purple 3 decker bus pulls up. The front of the bus says The Knight Bus on it. He gets on and it takes him on a wild ride through the streets of London at night, where he finally reaches his destination, the Leaky Cauldron. This is where he meets the Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge, who tells Harry he is not in any trouble for blowing up his aunt. Fudge also tells him about a person named Sirius Black, a madman prisoner who escaped from Azkaban and is intending to kill Harry. He also learns that while over the summer, Ron, Hermione had come to the Leaky Cauldron and are staying there too.
Harry, Ron and Hermione head back to school on the Hogwarts Express and end up sharing a compartment with the man who is to be their new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, a man named Remus Lupin. Suddenly without warning, the train stops suddenly and all the lights go out and it becomes increasingly colder. Suddenly, the door to the compartment opens and standing there is a towering, scary figure in a black withered robe, with rotted, hideous hands. The creature then starts sucking the happiness and good thoughts out of Harry, who faints, but the creature is sent away by a spell that the sleeping man has conjured.
When Harry comes to, he sees the sleeping man offering him a piece of chocolate. And that's when the man tells him that those horrid creatures were called Dementors, and that they are the guards at Azkaban, the prison for bad witches and wizards, and that they have a talent for performing something called The Dementor's Kiss, which means that they suck all the happiness out of a person until they are left with only the worst, painful and horrible memories and thoughts. At the school Dumbledore informs the students that the Dementors are there, looking for Black and that nothing magical will work on them, like Invisibility Cloaks, when he looks at Harry, knowing he has one, and he introduces Hagrid as the new Care of Magical Creatures class, and Professor Lupin as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. The kids begin to like his class because he teaches not just theory, but also practice. Things take a turn for the worst when in Hagrid's first ever class, Malfoy deliberately the Hippogriff(Half horse, half eagle), named Buckbeak, and it attacks him. Draco then tells his dad and Lucius Malfoy orders it to be executed.
Meanwhile, during a Quidditch match, the Dementors attack Harry, causing him to fall, and his broom being smashed to splinters by the Whomping Willow. He asks Lupin to teach him a spell that will repel the Dementors, which is called a Patronus charm and Lupin also tells Harry that in order to make it strong, he must concentrate on a happy thought and keep it there, keep focused on it. And because Harry did not get his permission slip signed to go to Hogsmeade, a magic village, Fred and George help him out, with a little something called The Marauder's Map. This item shows the location of every single person inside the castle as well as secret passages in and out of Hogwarts. He takes one on teh 5th floor and comes out in the basement of Honeydukes, a candy store with every candy known to witch or wizard. He also hs with him the Invisibility Cloak and manages to sneak into a room at the Hog's Head, a local pub. That's where he overhears that Sirius Black is his godfather, and his parent's best friend. He was accused of leaking the location of Harry's parents to Lord Voldemort, and murdering their mutual friend Peter Pettigrew and that all that was left of him was a pinky finger. From then on, Harry vows to kill Black.
When Harry is leaving his Divination class, he overhears Professor Trelawney in a trance, saying in a deep, dark voice that the Dark Lord's servant will return that night. Later on, Harry, Ron and Hermione visit Hagrid to comfort him over Buckbeak's future execution. While there, they discover Scabbers, Ron's pet rat. They hurry away to avoid being seen by Dumbledore, Fudge and the executioner who arrive at Hagrid's cabin. When Scabbers bites Ron, he drops it and it runs off, near the Whomping Willow. Suddenly a large black dog grabs Ron and drags him to underneath the Whomping Willow. When all of them are safely under the tunnel beneath the Whomping Willow, they follow it and discover it leads to the Shrieking Shack, which Hermione claims is the most haunted place in all of Great Britain. That's when they discover that the dog is actually Sirius Black and that he is an Animagus, meaning he can transform into animal at will. Harry goes for Black, but is then disarmed by Lupin. After talking with Black, Lupin embraces him as an old friend. When confronted by Hermione, Lupin admits to being a werewolf and that's when she realizes the reason Snape asked them to do an assignment on werewolves. Professor Snape busts in, saying that he will turn Black over to the Dementors and that's when Harry knocks him out with a spell. Lupin and Black explain that Scabbers is really Pettigrew, who is an Animagus, who committed the crime for which Black was framed
The 2 men then force Pettigrew back into human form and they prepare to kill him, but Harry has other plans. Pettigrew thinks Harry is saving him, and that's when Harry says that he would not want his father's 2 best friends to be killers. When Harry tells him that they'll turn him over to the Dementors, this clearly frightens Pettigrew. They head back to the castle and the full moon is out; forcing Lupin to transform. While they are all distracted by him, Pettirgrew changes back into a rat and runs away. Both Black and Lupin fight in their animal forms and Lupin stops when he hear's another animal's howls. Dementors surround Harry and Black at a small pond, and suddenly, a Patronus charm that looks like a stag saves their lives. And Harry thinks it's his dead father
When Harry is awake, he finds he is back in the castle and that the Dementors are going to perform their kiss on Sirius. Hermione then reveals that she has a device called a Time-Turner, which she has used all year to take classes simultaneously. They use it to go back in time and save Buckbeak from death. He then realizes that it was he who cast the Patronus charm, not his father. They also manage to save Buckbeak's life and Sirius escape to freedom. The next day, in the mail Harry gets a Firebolt, the fastest racing broom ever, with a note signed by Sirius.
Cast- Robbie Coltrane as Rubeus Hagrid, the Hogwarts gamekeeper and the new Care of Magical Creatures teacher.
- Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore, the Hogwarts Headmaster. Gambon assumed the role after Richard Harris, who played Dumbledore in the previous two films, died on 25 October 2002.[2] Despite his illness, Harris was determined to film his part, telling a visiting David Heyman not to recast the role.[3] Four months after Harris's death, Cuarón chose Gambon as his replacement.[3][4] Gambon was unconcerned with bettering or copying Harris, instead giving his own interpretation, putting on a slight Irish accent for the role,[5] as well as completing his scenes in three weeks.[6] Rumours of Ian McKellen being offered the role started to spread, but when confronted, he turned the rumours down, stating that he has played a similar character named Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He also stated it would have been inappropriate to take Harris' role, as the late actor had called McKellen a "dreadful" actor.[7][8] Harris's family had expressed an interest in seeing Harris's close friend Peter O'Toole being chosen as his replacement.[9]

- Gary Oldman as Sirius Black, an escapee from the Wizarding prison Azkaban and Harry's godfather. Oldman accepted the part because he needed the money, as he had not taken on any major work in several years as he had decided to spend more time with his children.[10] He drew inspiration from Cuarón, who he described as having "such enthusiasm and a joy for life,"[11] and compared Sirius to John Lennon.[10] He was "surprised by how difficult it was to pull off", comparing the role to Shakespearean dialogue.[11] Oldman suggested Sirius's hairstyle, while Cuarón designed his tattoos.[11] He had read the first book, and his children were fans of the series. The part made Oldman a hero with his children and their schoolmates.[5]

Thewlis, who had previously auditioned for the role of Professor Quirrell in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was Cuarón's first choice for the role of Lupin. He accepted the role on advice from Ian Hart, the man who was cast as Quirrell, who told him that Lupin was "the best part in the book."[12] Cuarón told Thewlis that he thought Lupin was gay, pitching him as a "gay junkie", although his idea turned out to be incorrect.[13] Thewlis had seen the first two films and had only read part of the first book, although after taking the role he read the third. He was excited about the prospect of making a children's film, and thoroughly enjoyed filming.[5]
