Early Life
-Alex was born in Canberra, Australia. He is of Irish and Scottish descent. He attended Macquarie Primary School with his sister Jacqui who is 2 years younger. He was born to a physics and astronomy teacher in Sydney, and his mother is a nurse. When he was 2, his parents divorced, making it hard for him to grow up. He suffered from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and asthma. When he was a kid, he wanted to be a jet pilot, but this dream was shot down by his teacher who tried to discourage him from this as he had asthma. He was a fan of heavy metal music as well, and also playing dress up with clothes out of an old trunk was fun to him. In 1999, he enrolled in the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. His first year was challenging because of the ADHD, but he graduated in June 2002, completing the challenging 3 year, full time Bachelor of Dramatic Art program, which has limited numbers of students who accept this.
Career
-His 1st taste of acting was a commercial for Marine recruits. He started his career in Australian TV by doing roles on shows like BlackJack: Sweet Science, Love Bytes, and White Collar Blue
-In 2004, he got his first chance at acting in movies when he landed the first lead film role in Oyster Farmer. And also he appeared on the Australian mini series The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant, which led to him getting a nomination at the Australian Film Institute Awards in 2005 and as Most Oustanding Actor in a Dramatic Series from the Logie Awards in 2006. In 2007, he joined the cast of The Shield, as Det. Kevin Hiatt, the newbie on the strike team.
-When he won the lead role on the CBS show Moonlight, he left The Shield. On Moonlight, he plays the role of Private Investigator Mick St. John, who was turned into a vampire by his new bride Coraline(Shannon Sossamon) on the couple's wedding night 95 years prior. In the present day, he fights with his vampire lust for blood and his attraction to partner Beth Turner(Sophia Myles), friendship with friend Josef Kostan(Jason Dohring) and dealing with other vampires in Los Angeles.
-Fans tried to keep the show on by having blood drives for a renewal of the show, but it proved unsuccessful
-In February 2010, it was announced that he would be cast in the new remake of the 1969 show Hawaii Five-O. He would be playing Lt. Comm. (LCDR) Steve McGarrett.
